BIS Silver Hallmarking and HUID: Everything Jewellers Need to Know (2025)
Following the success of mandatory HUID (Hallmark Unique ID) for gold jewellery since 2021, BIS extended the HUID system to silver jewellery from September 2025. Silver jewellery hallmarked under the new IS 2112:2025 standard must now carry a six-character HUID assigned by the Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (AHC). This guide explains what changed, how HUID works for silver, and what jewellers must do to comply.
What Changed in September 2025?
- ›BIS published IS 2112:2025 — the new Indian Standard for silver hallmarking, replacing IS 2112:2017
- ›IS 2112:2025 mandates HUID on each piece of hallmarked silver jewellery, identical to the gold HUID system
- ›AHCs are required to register every silver piece in the HUID online portal at the time of hallmarking
- ›The hallmark on silver jewellery must now include: BIS logo + purity mark (999, 970, 925, or 835) + AHC code + HUID (6-character alphanumeric)
- ›Silver hallmarking was voluntary before IS 2112:2025; it remains voluntary in the sense that there is no mandatory QCO forcing all silver jewellery to be hallmarked, but if you choose to hallmark, the new IS must be used
What Is HUID and How Does It Work for Silver?
The Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number is a six-digit alphanumeric code assigned to each individual piece of hallmarked jewellery at the time of hallmarking at a BIS-licensed AHC. For silver jewellery, the system works identically to gold:
- ›The jeweller submits silver items to a BIS-licensed AHC for assaying and hallmarking
- ›The AHC assays each piece to confirm the fineness (silver purity: 999, 970, 925, or 835)
- ›The AHC marks the piece with the hallmark (BIS logo + purity + AHC code + HUID)
- ›The AHC registers the HUID in the BIS HUID online portal, linking the code to the piece's assay data, AHC details, and date of hallmarking
- ›The jeweller receives the hallmarked piece; when sold, the jeweller must update the HUID portal to record the sale
- ›Consumers can verify any HUID on the BIS website (huidonline.bis.gov.in) or the BIS Care mobile app
Silver Purity Marks Under IS 2112:2025
IS 2112:2025 recognises four standard purities for silver jewellery in India:
- ›999 — Fine silver (99.9% minimum silver content)
- ›970 — 97.0% minimum silver content
- ›925 — Sterling silver (92.5% minimum silver content) — the most common for jewellery
- ›835 — 83.5% minimum silver content — common for silverware and decorative items
What Jewellers Must Do to Comply
- ›1. Ensure you are using a BIS-licensed AHC for all silver hallmarking — unlicensed hallmarking is illegal under the BIS Act, 2016
- ›2. Submit silver pieces to an AHC that is registered and operational on the HUID portal for silver (not all AHCs that handle gold are yet set up for silver)
- ›3. Confirm the AHC is applying the IS 2112:2025 hallmark format (with HUID) — pieces hallmarked under the old standard are no longer compliant for new hallmarking
- ›4. Register or update your BIS jeweller registration to include silver (if not already done)
- ›5. When a HUID-hallmarked silver piece is sold, update the HUID portal — this is a compliance obligation for registered jewellers
- ›6. Train staff to verify incoming silver stock for valid hallmarks — do not accept silver jewellery for resale without confirming the HUID is valid on the BIS portal
Consumer Implications
The extension of HUID to silver jewellery gives Indian consumers a powerful tool to verify what they are buying. Previously, silver purity claims were difficult to verify without independent assay. With HUID, consumers can scan or enter the 6-character code on any piece of hallmarked silver jewellery and instantly verify the purity, the AHC that tested it, and the date of hallmarking.
For jewellers, this is also a competitive advantage — offering HUID-hallmarked silver signals trustworthiness. As consumer awareness of hallmarking grows (driven by BIS campaigns around the gold HUID mandate), demand for hallmarked silver is expected to increase.
