BIS Hallmarking
BIS hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery sold in India (since June 2021). Jewellers must be registered with BIS, and jewellery must bear the HUID-based BIS hallmark.
Talk to a consultantWhat is BIS hallmarking?
BIS hallmarking certifies the purity of gold and silver jewellery in accordance with Indian Standards IS 1417 (gold) and IS 2112 (silver). The hallmark includes a BIS logo, purity grade (e.g., 916 for 22 karat), assay centre mark, and a unique HUID (Hallmark Unique ID) traceable via the BIS Care app.
From June 2021, gold jewellery sold in India must be hallmarked. Jewellers selling non-hallmarked gold jewellery are liable to penalties and seizure under the BIS Act 2016.
