BIS
Bureau of Indian Standards — India's national standards body, established under the BIS Act 2016.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India's national standards body, established under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. It operates under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India.
BIS performs three core functions: (1) developing and publishing Indian Standards (IS documents) through its network of Technical Committees, (2) operating product certification schemes (ISI Mark, FMCS, CRS, Hallmarking) that allow manufacturers to certify conformity to Indian Standards, and (3) administering hallmarking for gold and silver jewellery.
BIS has its headquarters in New Delhi and operates regional offices in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Chandigarh, and other cities. Foreign manufacturers dealing with India must interact with BIS primarily through the FMCS scheme.
