Indian Standard (IS)
A technical specification document published by BIS defining requirements for materials, products, processes, or services.
An Indian Standard (IS) is a technical document prepared by BIS in consultation with industry, government, and consumer bodies. It specifies minimum requirements — performance levels, material compositions, test methods, dimensions, and marking requirements — for a product, process, or service.
IS documents are identified by a number and the year of their most recent revision (e.g., IS 277 : 2003). The IS number is assigned sequentially and does not indicate product category. Indian Standards are revised periodically; always use the current edition when seeking BIS certification.
IS documents can be purchased from BIS at bis.gov.in or at BIS Sales Counter offices. They are not available free of charge. Complyr helps clients identify the correct IS for their product using our database of 2,500+ IS numbers.
