IS Number
The unique identifier for an Indian Standard — formatted as "IS XXXX" or "IS XXXX : YYYY".
An IS number is the unique identifier assigned to each Indian Standard published by BIS. It is formatted as "IS" followed by a number (e.g., IS 277) and optionally the year of the current edition (e.g., IS 277 : 2003). When an IS is revised, the year changes but the number stays the same.
IS numbers are assigned sequentially and do not encode product category information — IS 277 covers galvanised steel sheets while IS 278 covers galvanised wire. Multi-part standards add a part number (e.g., IS 9873 Part 1, IS 9873 Part 2).
For BIS certification purposes, it is critical to identify the correct current IS number for your product. Complyr maintains a searchable database of 2,500+ IS numbers to help manufacturers and importers find the right standard.
