BIS Certification for Chemicals & Chemical Products — India 2026

Indian Standards and mandatory QCO requirements for industrial chemicals, fertilizers, paints, pesticides, and chemical products sold or manufactured in India.

The chemicals sector is one of the fastest-growing areas of mandatory BIS certification in India. Multiple ministries — including Chemicals and Fertilizers, Agriculture, and Commerce — have issued Quality Control Orders covering fertilizers, industrial chemicals, paints, and agrochemicals. Both domestic producers and importers of chemical products must verify QCO applicability before manufacturing or importing.

Applicable BIS Scheme

ISI Mark (Scheme I / FMCS)

Chemical products use ISI Mark certification — not CRS. The applicable IS standard and ministry vary by product type. Some chemical QCOs are issued by the Ministry of Chemicals; others by Agriculture or Commerce. Always verify the specific QCO and ministry before applying.

QCO Compliance Note: Fertilizer QCOs are among the most strictly enforced in India — the Department of Fertilizers and Ministry of Agriculture both have active enforcement mechanisms including state-level inspections and market seizures. Chemical importers should pay particular attention to QCO effective dates, which are updated frequently. New QCOs for specialty chemicals and industrial chemicals are being notified at an accelerating pace in 2025–2026.
