BIS Certification for Electrical Goods & Appliances — India 2026
Mandatory ISI Mark certification for household appliances, industrial electrical equipment, wires and cables, switches, circuit breakers, and 90+ categories under new QCOs effective October 2026.
Electrical goods are the largest category of QCO-mandated products in India by number of SKUs. The Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2026, effective October 1, 2026, adds 90 new categories — including fans, geysers, irons, kettles, and hair dryers — to the mandatory certification list. Cables, wires, switchgear, and distribution transformers have been under QCO for years. This sector touches domestic manufacturers, importers, and OEM brand owners equally.
Applicable BIS Scheme
ISI Mark (Scheme I / FMCS)
Electrical appliances and equipment use ISI Mark — not CRS. CRS applies only to electronics and IT goods. The distinction matters: a fan needs ISI Mark under IS 374; an LED bulb needs CRS under IS 16102. Confirm the applicable scheme before applying — they have different timelines, fees, and inspection requirements.
