BIS Certification for Steel & Metal Products — India 2026
Indian Standards and mandatory QCO requirements for steel, stainless steel, TMT bars, galvanised sheets, pipes, tubes, and other metal products.
Steel is one of the most heavily regulated product sectors under BIS certification. The Ministry of Steel has issued a series of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) covering structural steel, flat products, pipes, tubes, and stainless steel. Both domestic manufacturers and foreign exporters must hold valid ISI Mark certification before steel products can be manufactured, imported, or sold in India.
Applicable BIS Scheme
ISI Mark (Scheme I / FMCS)
Steel products require ISI Mark certification. Domestic manufacturers use Scheme I; overseas manufacturers exporting to India must use FMCS (Scheme II). CRS does not apply to steel.

QCO Compliance Note: Over 30 steel product categories are covered under mandatory QCOs issued by the Ministry of Steel. Importing or selling non-certified steel in India is a punishable offence under the BIS Act, 2016. FMCS timelines for steel are typically 8–14 months — overseas manufacturers should begin the process well in advance.
