BIS Certification for Food Products in India — Indian Standards & QCOs 2026
BIS ISI Mark certification requirements for packaged foods, edible oils, spices, milk products, drinking water, and other food products under Indian Standards and FSSAI-BIS overlap.
Food products in India are subject to overlapping regulatory frameworks — FSSAI for food safety licensing, and BIS for product quality standards and certification. BIS certification for food is based on ISI Mark (Scheme I for domestic manufacturers, FMCS for importers), covering a range of product categories under mandatory and voluntary Indian Standards. This guide covers the key IS standards for food products and which are under active QCOs.
Applicable BIS Scheme
ISI Mark (Scheme I / FMCS)
Food products under BIS certification use ISI Mark — not CRS. Both mandatory (QCO-covered) and voluntary ISI Mark certification exists for food. BIS and FSSAI certifications are separate requirements — BIS ISI Mark does not replace FSSAI licensing.

QCO Compliance Note: Packaged drinking water and natural mineral water are the most strictly enforced QCO categories in food — no packaged water can be sold in India without an ISI Mark. Infant formula and iodised salt are also mandatory. For voluntary ISI Mark on food products, certification is commercially valuable for e-commerce and large-buyer procurement even where not legally required.
